Statement of Educational Philosophy and Leadership Style
Academic and administrative experiences over the past 35 years
have focused on learning how to work with faculty, students,
administrators and business leaders to achieve improvement in
teaching, research and service in business education. My work at
five universities:
the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Iowa State University, University
of Cincinnati, Illinois State University and the University of Northern Iowa, along with consulting
assignments to the federal government and businesses have taught
me the value of listening, communicating and building a consensus
in administration. My perspective on teaching is to give back to
students a quality education based on what my own teachers provided
to me during my undergraduate and graduate years. I believe that
every teacher chooses to be an educator because they experienced
good teaching, and desire to impart that same background to others.

From an administrative standpoint, leadership requires
encouraging, motivating and assisting faculty, staff and students
towards achievement of personal goals of excellence, and being committed to the values embodied within the 1940 AAUP Statement of Principles and Standards on Academic Freedom, Tenure and Shared Governance. In the 8 years
I served as Head of the Finance Department at UNI, I learned the importance
of working together with faculty, other administrators and business
leaders to complete mutually beneficial goals. I enjoy meeting with
representatives of the business community in order to communicate
the aspirations of students and faculty with the college of business.
I receive the same satisfaction from teaching other students, or completing
research projects related to business management. |

I appreciate the opportunity
of working collaboratively with faculty to develop theoretical and
practical solutions to business problems, participating in the transformation
from limited knowledge to expanded information about a subject. Many
of my co-authored papers developed from an initial discussion about
an idea with another faculty colleague who had background in an area
where I was deficient. In my years of work in Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio and Iowa, I have
enjoyed working with business leaders where were interested in funding ideas tol
improve the quality of business education at the university and ultimately benefit society for the greater good. As an
educator and administrative leader, one of my responsibilities would
be to provide business leaders with the information and rationale
for assisting the university in achieving academic excellence.
as its primary goal to students and the public. |
