Insurance Operations  is a major elective within the Finance degree program at the University of Northern Iowa.    The course is designed to help students secure a working knowledge of home office, insurance activities related to underwriting, claims settlement, investments, reinsurance, legal and regulatory issues.

Course Pre-requisites: 120:30;120:031;160:151; 800:072 or 800:092;920:053;920:054, Junior Standing


Course Goals and Objectives:

  1. To offer you a basic background in financial management issues unique to Insurance companies.
  2. To develop a working knowledge of the financial methods of reserving, indemnification, and ways of handling risks through assumption, avoidance, loss control and transfer.
  3. Toa give a systematic framework for identifying, classifying and dealing with potential loss producing activities with a focus on underwriting and claims management. 
  4. To provide a method for critically evaluating all types of risks with an appreciation of the relationship between risk and return within the context of financial planning and decision making. 
  5. To understand the multinational and international financial environment.
