Week Two

Ø      Why are you studying English and what are your future plans for using English?

Ø      What has surprised you most about Iowa?

Ø      What are the things that are most different about Iowa and your home country?

Ø      Describe your home community.

Week Three

Ø      What are some of the things you would do differently if you could live your life over?   (What direction (or paths) would you like to have taken in your life, but didn’t?)

Ø      How does the Iowa climate compare with the climate back home?

Ø      Your choice

Week Four

Ø      Would you rather be a male or a female in your society?  Why or why not?  What do you think are the main advantages and disadvantages of each one?

Ø      What do you associate with Monday morning, Sunday morning, Saturday night, Friday night or any other time of the week now that you live in the US? What did you used to associate with these times while you lived at home in your country?

Ø      Your choice

Week Five

Ø      Think of one example of non-verbal communication in your country that could be misinterpreted here.  Then, think of one example on non-verbal communication here in the US that could be misinterpreted in your country.

Ø      By now, you have probably had time to look through a variety of US magazines.  What kinds of things are advertised most? What does this suggest to you about US culture?

Week Six

Ø      Have you experienced culture shock yet?  What caused it?  Why were you shocked?

Ø      If you were suddenly given the right to dictate the behavior of people around you, what would you forbid and what would you force people to do?

Week Seven

Ø      How do family values in the US differ from those in your country?

Ø      What do you do for relaxation and exercise?  What sports to you enjoy, either playing or watching?
