Course Objectives/Goals:
Listening
By the end of this course, each student should be able to:
a. recognize the main points and key details of a short
academic lecture.
b. identify appropriate discourse
markers (e.g., transitions between the main
parts of the lecture, such as the introduction, main topics, and the
conclusion).
c. take adequate and appropriate notes on short lectures related to assigned
chapters from Mosaic I. Specific
skills needed include:
-
the use of abbreviations and symbols in place of words
-
the proper division/separation of distinct elements in the lecture
-
identification of the main topics and the most important supporting
details for each topic
-
recognition and use of key words (no full sentences or dictation)
d. discriminate between distinct vowel sounds and recognition of syllable
counts.
Speaking
By the end of this course, each student should be able to perform the
following:
a. utilize various speech functions such as:
-
asking for clarification
-
requesting confirmation
-
express opinion (e.g., likes/dislikes, agreement/disagreement) with
logical explanation.
b. improve overall classroom conversational abilities.
c. give short, well-organized and well-supported speeches/presentations on an
academic subject. This will include
appropriate library research.
d. improve ability to communicate outside of the classroom with others in the
campus and local community.
Course Evaluation: The instructor will assign grades to each
student’s performance in the following areas: tests/quizzes, homework and log
assignments, and preparedness for assigned class discussion topics.

NOTE: Listening and Speaking are complimentary skills, therefore, the student
must have a passing grade in both skill areas in order to move on to the next
level.
ATTENDANCE: You cannot do well in any of your classes if you are
frequently absent or late. The
instructor will record late arrivals and note all absences.
More than three absences may result in a lowering of the student’s
overall grade.
