Choice Readings, by Clarke, Dobson and Silberstein

An English-English Dictionary. Suggestion: The Longman Dictionary of American English

bulletCourse Objectives: By the end of this course, the student will be able to read modified academic material of 2-5 pages and:

1) understand the main idea of a paragraph or reading selection

2) guess the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary

3) use the rapid reading skills of skimming, scanning and previewing

4) identify specific statements that are used to illustrate or support general statements

5) use facts to support and opinion

6) separate fact from opinion

7) make inferences based on the material in a passage.

In general, you don’t always have to understand EVERY WORD that you see. We will talk about how to get the main ideas and learn how to learn new words while we read!

bulletEvaluation: I will compute your grade the following way:

            midterm examination 25%
            final examination 25%
            homework, vocabulary work 50%
            book reports, chapter tests quizzes, etc.....

bullet Book Reports: You must read at least two small novels.
bulletVocabulary: You must read one short article per week for your vocabulary study.
