1966 -
Graduated
from Dowling High School in West Des Moines. Starting
fullback on the team with only one loss.
Catcher for Dowling State Tournament team and was 1st. team All City
Selection.
1967 - Started softball career playing with Eastwood Tap/Nittlers Tap. Played for 1968 two years, catching Bud Fleagle.
1969
- Began his career with
the West Des Moines Mexican Eagles. He was the catcher for Jesse Valdez and Phil Diaz.
This was a high caliber team that won many tournaments in the state.
1972 -
Was invited
to catch for Reames Frozen Noodles in Des Moines.
Over the next five years this team won numerous City/District Championships,
Sub- state Championships and placed high each year in the State Open
Tournament. This team traveled a 7 state area and played in many major
tournaments. The team won championships in Prairie DuChein,
Wisconsin, Ames, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Fort Dodge, Mason City and Sully,
Iowa.
They played in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Austin and
Owatonna, Minnesota and in Rock Island, lliinois.
During this career, Dave was behind the plate calling
signals for such pitching greats as Don Bailey, Dale Belcher, Mike Clark, Don Flisher, Loren Graber, Gene Olson, Gene Knop,
Jerry Sands and Wayne Taylor.
Dave was known for his excellent defensive skills and threw
out potential base stealers at a rate of 90% plus.
Dave returned to the diamond in 1992 with the B-40 Bombers.
The team - qualified for the Open
State Tournament after victories in the District and Sub-State tournaments.
This was accomplished with a team who consisted of players who were allover the
age of 40 and did not have one practice or game prior to the District.
Dave was named to the 1970's All Decade team as one of
"THE BEST OF THE VERY BEST."
