Martin is a professor of Digital Journalism in\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/cm.uni.edu\/\">Department of Communication and Media<\/a> at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He is author of <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.uni.edu\/martinc\/no-longer-newsworthy\/\"><em>No Longer Newsworthy: How the Mainstream Media Abandoned the Working Class\u00a0<\/em><\/a>(Cornell University Press, 2019), winner of the 2020 C.L.R. James Award from the Working Class Studies Association, and a <em>Choice<\/em> Outstanding Academic Title for 2019. He is also author of an award-winning book on how labor unions are covered in the news media, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellpress.cornell.edu\/book\/9780801488870\/framed\/#bookTabs=1\"><em>Framed! Labor and the Corporate Media\u00a0<\/em><\/a>(Cornell University Press, 2004).<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s research and writing has been published in\u00a0<em>Journalism Studies, Journal of Communication Inquiry, Communication Research, Labor Research Journal, Perspectives on Politics, Popular Music and Society, Journal of Communication, In These Times,<\/em> <em>Editor &amp; Publisher<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Huff Post<\/em>, <em>Jacobin<\/em>, and <em>Nieman Reports<\/em>. He is co-author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macmillanlearning.com\/college\/us\/product\/Media--Culture\/p\/1319244939\"><em>Media and Culture<\/em><em>: Mass Communication in a Digital Age<\/em><\/a> (Bedford\/St. Martin\u2019s), now in its 14th edition, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macmillanlearning.com\/college\/us\/product\/Media-Essentials\/p\/1319208177\"><em>Media Essentials: A Brief Introduction<\/em><\/a> (Bedford\/St. Martin\u2019s), now in its 5th edition. Martin previously taught at Miami University (Ohio), and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.\u00a0 He is a recipient of the State of Iowa\u2019s Board of Regents Award for Faculty Excellence (2004) and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts Faculty Excellence Award (2010). Martin is president of <a href=\"https:\/\/ufaculty.uni.edu\/\">United Faculty<\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaup.org\/\">AAUP-AFT<\/a> affiliate and the faculty union at UNI since 1976. He is also a board member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowapublicradio.org\/\">Iowa Public Radio<\/a>, and chair of the board of directors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northerniowan.com\">Northern Iowan<\/a> student newspaper at UNI.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Christopher R.
