Spring Beauty

Fairy speeds, Ground Nut, Wild Potato

Clatonia virginica

PORTULACACEAE (Purslane Family)

This plant blooms in early spring. It grows in large patches in moist, open woodlands and even lawns. Plants disappear in June.

Native Americans, pioneers, and wildlife dug and ate the tubers and nibbled the thick green leaves.

The small pink or white flowers have darker pink veining. They like light and close at night and in dark weather.
