Black Walnut

Juglans nigra

This tree grows to a height of eighty to one-hundred feet. It is highly prized for its dark beautiful wood.

 

 

The compound leaves have a distinctive, identifying odor.

 

The juice from the thick green husk around the nut was often used by pioneers as a dye.

 

The nuts are a favorite food for squirrels. People use the nut meats in candies and ice cream.
