Graduate Student Guidelines: ONLINE JOURNALISM

1. You are expected to teach a portion of a class period connected to a class topic you are interested in and that may help advance your research. You will be given written feedback on your presentation (not a grade).

2. You are expected to turn in two 5-7 page, single-space papers in lieu of the midterm (October) and final exam (December). The papers should draw upon the themes we've been dealing with throughout each half of the semester (e.g.,How far online journalism has come in 10 years; the impact of blogging; transparency and participatory journalism; sojo reporting, visual aesthetics; and ethics) and focus on one specific topic area you choose related to your academic interests (e.g.,the ethical role of public relations in the blogosphere; the requirements of new photojournalism techniques for solo journalists). The papers should be well written synthesize and you should think of them as potentially publishable articles. Of course they should be properly referenced (APA or MLA) and use sources beyond our class. The first paper is due two weeks after the midterm and the second paper is due during finals week.
