Re: Ch. 22: Ethnicity, Ideology and the Media

1. Think about the way ethnicity is represented in our society. What are some examples of the media reflecting cultural representations of ethnicity, and what are some examples of the media changing cultural representations of ethnicity?
   Can you think of a contemporary media representation that reveals the following stereotypes?

• dangerous savage and civilized white
• noble savage
• people of color as childlike
• people of color as figures of fun and entertainment
• people of color as deviously clever and evil
• women of color as sexually exotic and alluring
  

2. What is your explanation as to why these stereotypes persist?

3. Can you think of one representation of an ethnic minority that completley challenges these "traditional" representations and the ideologies?
