Tuba Size:

 I have been looking at ads for used instruments, and would like to know the meaning and significance of the size of the instrument such as 3/4, 4/4,5/4, etc. I know this is probably a stupid question, but I always played a school instrument in high school and college, and didn't realize there were different sizes.  

 Piston vs. Rotary:

 What is your opinion on a front action piston type versus a rotary valve tuba?

 Maximum Upper Range:

 Could you please give me some idea of the practical frequency or pitch range for tuba. I've searched the internet but am unable to obtain any clues as to a practical upper limit (one which is comfortable to play). If I was to compose music requiring a BBb tuba, what might I expect from a professional tuba player?

 Silver vs. Brass :

Would you know of a useful resource where I may find explanations on the physical nature of a tuba and how its construction affects the sound of the tuba (i.e., lacquer vs. silver)(general and specific issues to consider)? Is there typically a timbre contrast in piston and rotor tubas? Affect of bore size on tone production? Also very importantly, things that one must consider and examine on a tuba before purchasing it?
