  • In Penstemons the corollas are 2 lipped with the lips having lobes. The upper corolla lip has 2 lobes and the lower lip has 3 lobes.
  • Penstemon means 5 stamens. The fifth (the staminoid) has no anther and is sterile. Some staminoids have tufts of hairs at the end, hence the name "beardstongue."
  • Creeping and Mat penstemons are small penstemons and are mat forming.
  • Bluemist Penstemon blooms in May and June. It is the most abundant small-flowered penstemon in the foothills and montane zones.
  • Virgatus has a glabrous staminoid. It is abundant throughout the foothills and middle altitudes.

Figwort Family

  • In Scarlet Bugler, the 3 lobes of the lower corolla are reflexed. It is found on rocky canyonsides and in the pine belt.
  • Rocky Mountain Penstemon has dark blue flowers and is somewhat one sided. It is found in sagebrush, pinon-juniper zone, and mesic mountain meadows.
  • Whipple's Penstemon has flowers in a headlike cluster, and it is glandular hairy. It is abundant in the alpine and subalpine zones, occurring in open meadows and dry woods.
  • Owl Clover has flowers in a terminal club-shaped cluster. It grows in dry fields and slopes of the foothills and montane areas.

Figwort Family

  • Monkey Flower has yellow flowers spotted with red. It is found around springs and streambanks usually in the subalpine zone.
  • Alpine Speedwell is a small plant with compact clusters of blue-violet flowers. They are only slightly irregular. It is common in moist meadows, streambanks, and bogs in alpine and subalpine zones.
  • Mullein petals are only slightly irregular. It is a tall weed found along roadsides, banks and waste ground. The leaves are covered with woolly hairs.
